About
We are Nicky & Lily, a mother/daughter team.
The Edible Acre is our small-scale, regenerative market garden.
In 2021 we started our market garden on a derelict plant nursery near Dorchester, Dorset.
Over the following 5 months we completely regenerated the site into a no-dig vegetable farm, removing over 30m3 of horticultural plastic waste and bringing in double that of organic matter, fixing 600m2 of existing glasshouse and resurrecting two polytunnels.
Since then we have been working to repair and build the soil and the ecosystem there. We use completely natural and sustainable inputs including compost teas, biodynamic preparations and green manures to inject life and nourishment back into the soil which provides us a rich basis to grow our produce.
In 2023, we took on more land just outside of Bridport and are now growing on just under 2 acres.
Local and sustainably produced food is at the heart of both of our backgrounds, with Nicky coming from over 40 years as a professional horticulturalist and Lily as a whole-foods based chef. We are passionate about sharing our knowledge and regularly run courses throughout the year including propogation, natural dyeing, fleece and wool crafts etc.
At The Edible Acre, we believe that working harmoniously with nature is the only way.
We grow using minimal soil disturbance, no pesticides/herbicides, and no chemical fertilisers. Our garden includes over 60 no-dig beds, three beehives, a worm farm, cut-flower area, medicinal herb garden, greenhouses and a composting area.
By prioritising sustainable practices, we are looking to create a circular-system vegetable garden that puts as much back in as it takes out. Ultimately building a more resilient eco-system, and stronger community connections to small scale farming.
